Full Bio

James A. Devor (b. 1998) is an American composer and double bassist who genuinely believes classical music needs to be made available for everyone. His music draws on a wide-ranging stylistic background inspired by growing up in central Pennsylvania. Always blending ‘high’ and ‘low’ music, James pushes to view all genres as equally valid and is tired of the prevailing elitism in the contemporary classical music scene.
His music grapples with humanity’s rapidly-changing emotions, specifically those centered around conflicts between social classes. James’ work is also interested in the struggles facing neurodivergent individuals and their perception within society. Recent pieces of his have responded to the lack of support around men’s mental health, pushing through religious trauma, and union solidarity within the American working class. When writing, James prioritizes collaborative opportunities with local artists and writers to present authentic stories, resulting in a supportive triangle of creatives, performers, and the audience.

James was the 2024 commissioned composer for the Georgia State Teachers Association, where he premiered dear delightful hollow square, a work which mixes narration and four-channel live electronics to dive into the creation of traditional American shape-note singing and ponders what we as a society should salvage from religious traditions. His mini-opera, Fairies Found and Lost, premiered at Opera from Scratch 2024 and depicts fairy folklore from Scottish Gaelic immigrants coming across the sea to Nova Scotia. James’ recent large-scale work, The Workers’ Prayers, combines satire with song, resulting in a 25-minute work for vocal soloists and ensemble. The prayers set text by Pennsylvania-based poet Jeff Rath, transforming the traditional mass into a worship service dedicated to our superior Capitalist corporations and overlords.

As a bassist, James specializes 20th and 21st century solo and chamber repertoire by American composers. He has training and made recordings in jazz, folk, bluegrass, indie, and traditional classical music. James is a founding member of Aimless Duo, which served as the ensemble-in-residence at the 2024 Georgia Music Teachers Association Conference and was invited to perform at the 2025 Napoleon Electronic Music Festival and the 2025 New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival. He is the bassist for the NeoMosaic Ensemble, which was in residence at NACUSAfest 2025, and was previously the principal bassist for the Hartford Independent Chamber Orchestra. James currently plays with the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra and is the principal bassist and a founding member of the Madison Gamer Symphony Orchestra.

His works have received awards from NACUSA, the Festival of New American Music, the American Prize, ASCAP, and the Red Jasper Award. James has also been a participant at Hypercube Composition Lab, MNSong – Source Song Festival, New Music on the Point, and European American Musical Alliance. He completed graduate work at The Hartt School – University of Hartford and received his Artist Diploma from OAcademy as a 2024 cohort member of the Gabriela Ortiz Composing Studio.
