Program Note:
Windswept Chasm opens into anxiety with three thunderous chords which quickly fade into nothingness. Slowly, a theme is constructed using seemingly random fragments overtop of drone notes, until it builds, returning to the opening harmonic statements. Soon the theme is presented and continuously varied overtop of a new, mixed-meter groove. Like winds, aspects of this piece increase in intensity and then suddenly back down into the calm eye of the storm, only to return with more furor than ever.
The piece represents the vastness of the natural architecture whether we appreciate it or not. As a species, humans have forever attempted to emulate this natural style in everything we do. This is from literal architecture and building style, to the paintings of landscape and scenery. However, we also like to lessen the gravity and fury that true nature holds. We copy the parts of the natural world that are kind to us, while completely ignoring the rest of the true world.
Windswept Chasm desires to explore both the comfortable and uncomfortable aspects of nature.
